Youth ministry is often treated as an entry point, the work you do before you move on to something more serious. The people who actually do it tend to see it differently. “I think youth ministry is the innovative, the creative, the cutting-edge way that ministry survives,” says one participant in the Yale Divinity School Certificate in Youth Ministry Leadership. “As fast as youth ministry changes, it’s at the same rate that our material changes.”

That idea sits underneath the certificate program offered through the Yale Youth Ministry Institute, which Yale Divinity School celebrated with a program completion ceremony on May 28, 2026. In the video, members of the cohort describe what brought them to the program and what they took from it.

Several arrived already deep in the work. “I’d already been doing a lot of youth ministry and already been called my whole life to ministry,” one says. “When I discovered the youth ministry program, I realized I could deepen that in an academic way.” The result was less a change of direction than a confirmation of one: the program “validated my calling in a way that I couldn’t have believed just like reading the description of it.”

Others came looking for two things at once. “When I started two years ago, I realized I needed a community plus the theory,” another participant says. Not a small community, but a large one.

The curriculum is organized around three areas: leadership theory in church organizations, theological and spiritual care for youth with a focus on mental health, and empowerment, liberation, and justice work with youth. Participants describe those threads in plainer terms. “We learned a lot about justice, empowerment, self-care,” one says. They also stress how portable the material turned out to be. “The resources that we got in this program can be applied to anywhere in the world, in Latin America, in the US, or in Europe,” one says. “So that’s a highlight I have for this program.”

The program also reframed how participants understand their own presence in ministry. The online program, one says, has shaped their faith in ministry by “making sure that you realize that you bring your whole self to ministry, and you get to show up as the kids need you and as the youth need you and that is perfectly okay and just how God called you.”

Much of the coursework is aimed at a gap participants already felt. “The things that children, youth, and families are needing is really different from the way that churches and institutions have been,” one says. “And from the get-go, from the very first trimester, I was learning about these systems and given tangible tools for navigating all of the difficulties that were coming in that.”

What the program does not offer is a finished answer, and participants seem to regard that as the point. “You don’t have it all solved, because I think we’re all learning it together,” one says. “But I have, I feel like, a sense of real direction, or real groundedness.”

The Certificate in Youth Ministry Leadership is a nine-month, cohort-based online program divided into three trimesters, combining asynchronous coursework with weekly live sessions and small group meetings. It is designed for youth pastors, committed volunteers, part-time workers, and laypeople actively involved in youth work in a local faith community, and awards a Yale non-degree certificate upon completion. The 2026 cohort begins in September 2026, and applications for the following cohort open in 2027.
